In the town museum Osterode you learn about everything that is well worth knowing around the Osterode's citizens in the Middle Ages, the function of the guildhall as well as the general market and battle events in the past.
The museum in the Ritterhaus at the Rollberg is housed in a wonderful imposing middle-class house.
The name gave a knight-like figure that is affixed at the façade of the building. The museum itself was established in 1936 and has been since a starting point for the history of Osterode and the Südharz.
The section 'town' is in the ground floor situated. It addresses the development and the settling at the end of the 10.century. Important are the objects deposited with the corpse in the grave of the last duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen. His family ruled until 1596.
The section 'guildhall' shows the political life as well as administration and jurisdiction of that time.
In the section 'citizen's house' items of daily life are on display as well as the health and education system.
Trade and coinage are described in the section 'economy'.
The dark chapter 'Wehr und Wacht' (armed forces and watch) documents the battle and fire events of the past.
The since 1952 existing partnership with Ostpreussen is the reason for the section 'Local room Osterode/Ostpreußen'.
Here habits and culture are shown.
The middle section is a model of the town Osterode, as it was around 1860. One can reconstruct vividly the change to the present.

who spent most of his life in Osterode.
The section 'craft' gives an inside view into the different working life and way of living of the trade guilds and craftsmen. Whether silver, copper, zinc or iron forge, whether cobbler, tanner, tubber or iron moulders.
The family 'Schachtrupp' is a good example for the high life of a manufacturer's family in the 19.century.
Named after the family is also the 'Schachtrupp villa', that is used as the tourism information centre.
Then follows the 'plaster industry', which is still today a big economical factor of the region Osterode.
In the section 'geological, primeval and pre-historical collection' is a big collection of different fossils and excavations like mammoth teeth, skull of a rhino...
